Fall Family Photos at Carvers Creek State Park in Spring Lake, NC

If you’re looking for a beautiful spot for fall family photos near Fayetteville, NC, Carvers Creek State Park in Spring Lake is one of my favorites.

It’s peaceful, natural, and has a little bit of everything: trees, open fields, trails, and beautiful golden light. It also gives kids plenty of room to move around, which is always a bonus when you’re trying to photograph a family with little ones.

As a family, maternity, and newborn photographer in North Carolina, I’m always looking for locations that feel natural and don’t require families to do too much posing. Carvers Creek is one of those places.

Why I Love Carvers Creek for Family Photos

One of my favorite things about Carvers Creek is the variety.

You can start your session walking through the trees, move into an open field, and finish with some cozy family photos as the sun starts to go down. We don’t have to spend your entire session in one spot.

That variety also helps when you have young kids.

Instead of asking them to stand still and smile over and over, we can let them walk, explore, run, and play. I’ll step in and capture those moments along the way.

Some of my favorite family photos aren’t the ones where everyone is looking at the camera. They’re the ones where a child is laughing, someone is giving Mom a hug, or everyone is walking together holding hands.

What Is Fall Like at Carvers Creek?

If you’re expecting the mountains of North Carolina covered in bright red and orange leaves, Carvers Creek is a little different.

And that’s part of what makes it so pretty.

Carvers Creek is known for its longleaf pine forests, so you’ll see lots of beautiful green throughout the park. However, there are also lots of pretty spots with fall colors as well!

Think warm sunlight, tall grasses, pine trees, and pops of yellow and orange.

It’s a really pretty backdrop for family photos without feeling overly “fall themed.”

The Best Part: Beautiful, Natural Light

Photographers are always thinking about light, and Carvers Creek has some really pretty options.

The trees give us soft shade, while the open areas allow us to take advantage of that warm evening light.

For fall family sessions, I especially love the time leading up to sunset. The light gets softer and warmer, and it gives the whole session a cozy feel.

It’s also one of the reasons I encourage families not to worry too much about getting every photo perfectly posed.

Once we have good light and a beautiful location, we can just focus on you being together.

Carvers Creek Is Great for Families With Kids

If you have toddlers or young children, you already know that family photos can sometimes feel a little unpredictable.

That’s okay.

Actually, I prefer it that way.

Your child doesn’t need to sit still and smile the entire time. We can take a few traditional portraits, but then we’ll let them move around.

We’ll walk.

We’ll play.

We’ll cuddle.

We’ll chase each other.

We’ll take breaks when we need to.

I’ll give you prompts and little things to do together so you don’t have to wonder what you’re supposed to do with your hands.

The goal is for your photos to look like your family, not a perfectly posed version of someone else’s.

Carvers Creek Is Also Beautiful for Maternity Photos

Carvers Creek isn’t just a great family photography location. It’s also one of my favorite places for maternity photos in Spring Lake, NC.

The open fields are beautiful for full-body maternity portraits, especially with a long, flowing dress. The trees give us a more intimate setting for photos with your partner.

Maternity sessions can be simple.

You don’t need a complicated setup or a bunch of props. You’re already the most important part of the photograph.

I want to document this season before your baby arrives—the excitement, the connection, and the way your family is growing.

What Should You Wear?

When it comes to fall family photos, I usually recommend keeping things simple.

You don’t have to find matching outfits for everyone. Instead, choose colors that work well together.

Some of my favorite colors for Carvers Creek are:

Cream and ivory
Beige and tan
Rust and terracotta
Olive and sage
Mustard
Brown and camel
Dusty blue
Soft neutrals

I also love mixing textures. Think sweaters, linen, denim, corduroy, and flowy dresses.

If you’re planning a maternity session, a long dress can look especially pretty in the open fields.

The most important thing is that everyone is comfortable. If your toddler hates their outfit, we’re going to know about it. Choose something they can move in and feel good wearing.

A Little About Carvers Creek State Park

Carvers Creek State Park is located at 2505 Long Valley Road in Spring Lake, NC, just outside of Fayetteville.

The Long Valley Farm area is home to open fields, longleaf pine forests, trails, and historic buildings. The property also has an interesting history. It was once the winter home of James Stillman Rockefeller, and the Rockefeller House was completed in 1938.

A Note for Fellow Photographers

If you’re another photographer and you’re thinking about using Carvers Creek for a paid session, make sure you know the park’s current photography rules.

Commercial photography requires a permit at North Carolina State Parks.

The state park system currently has a Special Activity Permit process for commercial photography. The state recommends submitting the application at least two weeks before your session.

I would definitely bookmark that page if you’re a photographer in the area. Park rules and requirements can change, so it’s always best to check the official information before your session.
